In recent months, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed the way we work and play, giving almost anyone the power to write code, create art, and even invest. For both professional and hobbyist users, generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, feature advanced capabilities to create decent quality content from simple requests provided by users.
While Microsoft is adding GPT-4 to Bing, OpenAI is adding Bing to ChatGPT, and Bard knows PaLM 2, keeping up with all the latest AI tools can be confusing, to say the least. Knowing which of the three most popular AI chatbots is best for writing code, generating text, or helping build resumes is a challenge, so we'll break down the biggest differences so you can pick the one that fits your needs.
A. Definition Between the Three AI Chatbots
ChatGPT (Left), Bing Chat (Middle), and Google Bard (Right) |
1. ChatGPT
ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by OpenAI. It's based on the GPT-3.5 architecture consisting of multiple layers of artificial neural networks. Its main function is to chat with users, answer questions, and provide information on various topics. ChatGPT is a popular AI model with an active user base of around 100 million as of January 2023, according to a UBS report in February 2023.
The training data for ChatGPT is derived from a vast corpus of text from the internet. The training data is preprocessed using tokenization, which breaks down the text into individual tokens, such as words or punctuation marks. The training data is unlabelled, meaning the model learns to identify patterns and relationships in the text without explicit labels or annotations.
ChatGPT can be accessed through a web-based interface, and users can start conversations with the tool immediately. ChatGPT is particularly useful for tasks that require natural language processing, such as customer service, technical support, and personal assistants.
However, ChatGPT has some limitations. While it can provide information on a variety of topics, its responses may not always be as accurate as those given by search engines like Bing. Additionally, ChatGPT may struggle with more complex or technical questions, as its responses are based on existing data rather than real-time search results.
2. Bing Chat
Bing is a search engine developed by Microsoft that utilizes a combination of machine learning algorithms, statistical models, and heuristics to provide relevant search results for users. It is one of the most popular search engines worldwide, with a market share of around 2.79%, according to April 2023 statistics published by StatCounter GlobalStats.
The training data for Bing consists of various sources, including user queries, search results, and web pages. Bing employs both supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to train its model. The supervised learning approach involves training the model using labeled data, such as user queries and search results. The unsupervised learning approach involves extracting features and patterns from text data to enable the model to better understand the semantics and context of search queries.
Bing also offers a chatbot feature that can answer questions, provide recommendations, and perform user tasks. It can handle simple tasks such as setting reminders and making appointments. Bing is accessible through browsers or mobile applications, making it user-friendly for individuals not familiar with AI technology.
Bing's image search function is a unique feature that utilizes computer vision to understand image content and provide more accurate search results. This makes it a valuable tool for users who need to search for images for presentations or other projects.
Another advantage of Bing is its integration with other Microsoft products, such as Office and Windows. This makes it convenient for users to access and share search results across different platforms. Bing also offers "Bing Rewards," allowing users to earn points using the search engine. These points can be redeemed for gift cards, discounts, and other rewards.
3. Google Bard
Google Bard is an AI language model developed by Google powered by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications). It's designed to assist users in writing poetry and song lyrics by suggesting rhymes and phrases. This model is still in the beta phase. Its underlying architecture is based on a combination of neural networks, statistical models, and generative algorithms.
The training data for Google Bard includes various samples of poetry, including classical literature, modern poetry, and user-generated content. The training data is labeled, meaning the model is trained using annotated samples of poetry. This training data allows the model to learn patterns and structures from various types of poetry, enabling it to generate creative and technical poems.
The strength of Google Bard lies in its user-friendliness. It can be accessed through a web-based interface, and users can start using it immediately. One unique feature of Google Bard is its ability to mimic the writing style of famous authors. This can produce text that sounds like Shakespeare or J. K. Rowling. This makes it a great tool for users who want to write in a specific style or tone. Additionally, this AI tool can be used for tasks such as text summarization and translation.
In the 'Hard Fork' podcast in March 2023, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the company's plans to transition from LaMDA to a PaLM-based (Pathways Language Model 2) model in the near future. The PaLM-based model is trained with vast text and code in over 200 languages and more than 20 programming languages.
However, it's worth noting that Google Bard may not be suitable for tasks requiring factual information or technical expertise, and its responses may not be as complex as those provided by ChatGPT.
B. Comparison Between Three AI Chatbots
To help determine which AI chatbot gives more accurate answers, I'm going to use a simple prompt to compare the Three :
"I have 5 oranges today, I ate 3 oranges last week. How many oranges do I have left?"
The answer should be Five, as the number of oranges I ate last week doesn't affect the number of oranges I have today, which is what we're asking the three bots. First up, ChatGPT.
1. ChatGPT
a. You want to try the most popular AI Chatbot
ChatGPT was created by OpenAI and was released for widespread preview last November. Since then, the AI chatbot has gained over 100 Million Users, with its website alone being visited by 1.8 Billion Visitors every month. It has become a center of controversy, especially as people find its potential to handle school tasks and replace some workers.
Questions on Free Version of ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) |
We have consistently tested ChatGPT since its release. The user interface remains simple, but minor changes have significantly improved it, such as adding a copy button and easy access to your account.
Although ChatGPT has proven itself as a valuable AI tool, it is susceptible to misinformation. Like other large language models (LLMs), GPT-3.5 is not perfect, as it was trained on human-generated data up until 2021. GPT-3.5 also often fails to grasp nuances, as seen in our math question example, where it answered incorrectly by saying we have two oranges left instead of the correct answer, which is five.
b. You're willing to pay extra for an Upgrade
OpenAI allows users to access ChatGPT, powered by the GPT-3.5 model, for free with a registered account. However, if you're willing to pay for the Plus version, you can access GPT-4 for $20/Month (Rp. 300.000/Month).
GPT-4 is the largest LLM available for use when compared to all other AI chatbots. GPT-4 has over 100 trillion parameters; GPT-3.5 has 175 billion parameters. More parameters essentially mean that the model has been trained on more data, making it more likely to provide accurate answers.
Questions on ChatGPT Plus (GPT-4) |
For instance, you can see that the GPT-4 model, available through the ChatGPT Plus subscription, correctly answers math questions because it understands the complete context of the problem from start to finish.
Furthermore, let's consider Bing Chat, which is a great way to access GPT-4 for free, as it is integrated into the new Bing format.
2. Bing Chat
a. You want generative AI with Internet access
Unlike ChatGPT, which is limited to an AI tool that generates text in a conversational style with information leading up to 2021, Bing now features a chat option that formats search results as a conversation with an AI chatbot.
There are other benefits as well. Bing Chat is powered by GPT-4, OpenAI's largest language model, and it's completely free to use.
Questions on Bing Chat (Precise Mode) |
The User Interface of Bing Chat is not as User-friendly as ChatGPT, but it is navigable.
Although Bing Chat can access the internet to provide you with more up-to-date results compared to ChatGPT, in my opinion, Bing Chat is more susceptible to stopping responses and skipping requests than its competitors.
b. You prefer more Visual Features
Through a series of recent enhancements to its platform, Microsoft has added visual features to Bing Chat that are not possessed by ChatGPT and Google Bard. At this point, you can ask Bing questions like, 'what is a baby hedgehog?', and get an information card as a response, complete with a photo, lifespan, eating habits, and much more.
When you use Bing in chat mode, you can also ask it to create images for you.
Provide Bing with a description of the image you want, and ask the chatbot to generate four images for you to choose from.
Questions on Bing Chat (Balanced & Creative Mode) |
Bing Chat also features different conversational styles as you interact with the chatbot, including Creative, Balanced, and Precise, which adjust how light or direct the interaction is.
Finally, let's switch to Google Bard, which uses a different LLM and will soon receive some major enhancements.
3. Google Bard
a. You want a Fast, Unlimited Experience
While testing various AI chatbots, I've noticed that Google Bard compensates for different shortcomings. Although I wouldn't say it's flawless, I'd say that Google's AI chatbot has its merits - and one of them is speed.
Google Bard is quick with its responses, although there are occasional errors. It's not faster than ChatGPT Plus, but it can be faster in delivering responses compared to Bing and the free GPT-3.5 version of ChatGPT, although your mileage may vary.
Questions on Google Bard |
Bard initially seemed like it would answer our Math Questions correctly. However, it still made the same mistake as other bots, which is adding the formula 5 - 3 = 2.
Bard is also not limited to a fixed number of responses, like Bing Chat. You can have long conversations with Google Bard, while Bing is restricted to 20 replies in a single conversation. Even ChatGPT Plus limits users to 25 messages every 3 hours.
b. You want a more Google experience
Google announced several AI updates during its I/O Conference, including how it plans to enhance Bard and its flagship search engine. Bard is being upgraded to PaLM 2, the latest and largest Google LLM version, which was announced during the event.
PaLM 2 will help Bard support over 100 languages over time, as well as improve coding, debugging, and math skills. However, at present, ChatGPT is said to support over 80 languages.
Google also plans to incorporate more visual elements into the Bard platform than what's available in Bing Chat. Users will soon have the ability to upload photos through integration with Google Lens, create images through Adobe Firefly, and plugins like Kayak, OpenTable, Instacart, and Wolfram Alpha will be added as well.
